The Beliş locality

This open gate towards Transylvania is situated at the foot of the Vlădeasa massif in the Western Mountains, at a 1,125 m height, in the North-West side of Cluj county. The first documentary proof of its existence, under the name of “Flavia Beles”, goes back to the year 1369. Beliş is 27 km away from the city of Huedin, 77 from that of Cluj and 133 from that of Oradea. The Beliş-Fântânele Lake, a great tourist attraction, lies very close by, surrounded by a wonderful landscape. The lake covers a distance of 27 km and its total area is of 2 224 acres/900 hectares. The rock-fill dam has a volume equal to that of the Keops pyramid.

The administrative territory of the Beliş locality lies in the South-West part of Cluj county, at the border between the Gilău Mountains and the Great Mountain, both of which are part of the Western Mountains, and the Vlădeasa Mountains, which belong to the Bihor Mountains. The neighbours of Beliş are the following localities: Călăţele and Margău (Cluj county) in the North, Sudrigiu (Bihor county) in the West, Horea (Alba county) in the South, Rişca, Mărişel and Măguri Răcătău (Cluj county) in the East.

The Beliş locality is unique in Cluj county due to the presence of the altitude habitat, from 1000 to 1300 m height and due to the Beliş-Fântânele accumulation lake. The altitude varies from 920 m at the confluence of the rivers Ghiduri and Someşul Cald to 1760 m at the Măgura Vânătă Peak, the average height being that of 1100-1200 m.

The Beliş locality is made up of six villages: Beliş, Bălceşti, Dealul Botii, Smida, Giurcuta de Sus and Horea Glade. The capital of the locality is Beliş village.
The touring potential of the locality is great, considering the beauty of environment and the vicinity of the tourist resort Fântânele-Beliş, a fact rendered obvious by the growing number of numerous chalets and cottages in the villages of the locality within the last few years. The Western Mountains National Park, Fântânele Lake, Horea’s pine tree in the Scoruset forest and the local natural potential represent genuine riches in this area. The development of tourist facilities (especially that of rural tourism) and the continual bettering of the means of communication represent a chance for the area’s economic development.
The connection between the villages, as well as the connection with the neighboring territorial administrative units is accomplished by means of road communication.

The connection between the commune center and the villages around it is done on DJ 108 Huedin-Campeni-Albac (Poiana Horea), DC 121 Belis-Balcesti (Balcesti), DC 128A Doda Pilii-Giurcuta de Sus, DC 128B Rachitele-Dealu Botii and 128C Doda Pilii-Smida, with the last three villages – Giurcuta de Sus, Dealu Botii and Smida – on the circuitous road Giurcuta de Sus, Dealu Botii and Smida. The distance to the center of the county - namely Cluj-Napoca city - is 80 km, and to Huedin, the nearest town, is of 26 km.
